art therapy for children

Art therapy creates a place for creative growth, for freedom to express, be messy, experiment, make choices. A safe place to take risks, express their inner self. A welcoming retreat, where they are given time, respect, attention, and support.

In our sessions, I explore different ways to understand and relate to the child. Apart from a few physical milestones, children develop at different rates. It’s a constant shift/back-and-forth of pushing boundaries and retreating, trying to find balance. Rather than converging on a medical diagnosis, I explore through art assignments behavioural issues such as:

Memory, attention and focus problems

Behavioural issues and bullying

Addiction to screens and video games

Body awareness and image

Self-confidence issues and hypersensitivity

Art therapy is particularly suitable as a therapeutic intervention for children (and adults) with developmental disabilities and impairments, such as:

  • visual or hearing impairments
  • physical disability
  • autism
  • Down syndrome

In the event your child is diagnosed with – or you have a reason to suspect that your child is experiencing any of these conditions – it may be worthwhile to contemplate incorporating art therapy as part of their therapeutic regimen.
